Breast Enhancement

Female breasts have been symbols of femininity, sacred symbols of motherhood and mysterious objects of desire to mankind. And yet, they are not always a source of pride and satisfaction to women. Artists, designers and movies have brought hitherto private body parts to the public eye and created higher expectations in the minds of both men and women, as to what ideal breasts are like. A survey conducted in the united states revealed that 76 percent of women were dissatisfied with their breast size, and 40 percent of male responders

expressed dissatisfaction with the breast size of their partners. For many women the breast size is too small, too large or not contoured enough; cosmetic breast surgery can be the answer.

Types of Breast Enhancement

Each patient has unique needs and goals so each procedure will vary depending on the patient and the cosmetic surgeon treating. It is important to have a clear idea of aesthetic goals as well as an understanding of how the procedure is to be performed prior to the onset of surgery.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

One of the most common effects of recent pregnancy, weight loss, gravity, and the natural aging process is the accumulation of loose excess skin in your breasts, causing them to take on a sagging or drooping appearance. If your breasts are sagging or droopy,

a breast lift (mastopexy) can help you. A Breast lift removes excess skin from the breasts and tightens the remaining skin, giving your breasts a more “perky” and youthful appearance.

Breast Augmentation

Many women may feel that their breasts are too small, lack enough volume or youthful contour, lack upper pole fullness, or are too droopy. Breast augmentation enhances your breasts by adding volume and fullness, giving them a more youthful and sensual shape and appearance that improves your breasts’ proportion to your body frame.

Breast Lift with Implants

Weight fluctuations, breastfeeding, the natural aging process, and the effects of gravity can change the shape, volume, and overall appearance of your breasts over time. Diminished skin elasticity combined with the loss of breast volume can cause your breasts to droop or sag and appear deflated. By performing a breast lift with implants, you can rejuvenate your breasts and achieve a beautiful, youthful shape. A breast lift with implants (augmentation mastopexy) addresses sagging tissue and excess skin while enhancing breast volume. If an implant is placed alone in droopy breasts, it typically fills the upper part and the end result is called a “Snoopy” breast, because the lateral breast profile looks like the dog Snoopy’s nose! A breast lift with implants combines a traditional breast lift procedure with breast augmentation to simultaneously address volume loss and excess skin that may be causing your breasts to droop. By removing any excess or redundant skin, your breasts can be restored to a more elevated position. Adding implants then to further improve the projection and overall shape of the breasts and provide you with the larger volume that you desire.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery can help patients alleviate the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with having overly large breasts. Women who have breasts that are too large for their body frame can often experience pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery can remove excess fat and skin from the breasts to provide better proportion to the body and improved comfort. If one breast is larger than another, it may be reduced to give you better volume symmetry.

Breast Reconstruction

The loss of one or both breasts can cause severe physical and emotional turmoil; however, the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery have seen significant advances over the last few decades, and breast reconstruction has been one of the most resounding successes. If you are born with breast shape, volume or size asymmetry, or develop breast deformity during puberty, breast reconstruction may be for you. Corrective surgery is available to fix inverted or excessively large prominent nipples or areola. If you have had breasts removed due to a mastectomy, lumpectomy, injury, or deformity you can restore what you have lost with breast reconstruction.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Male breast reduction can reduce excess fat and tissue from the breasts in men who suffer from gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is a common condition among men that is characterized by an excess build-up of fat or firm tissue in the breasts and behind your nipples.

All Surgery Carries Some Uncertainty and Risk

There are multiple risks associated with a breast lift and breast augmentation procedures. It is critical to understand these risks and to have realistic expectations regarding surgery outcomes. Only through an in-depth discussion with a surgeon will the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes become clear.

General signs and symptoms associated with, but not specific to cancer include:

  • Infection is always a risk of surgery. Antibiotics may be taken post-surgery to minimize the risk of infection. After implant insertion, a scar tissue forms around the implant which can cause the breast to feel firmer than normal. In extreme cases, the scar formation can distort the breasts and the implants which may require the removal of scar tissue.
  • Breast lifts and implants are not expected to last forever. For example, the implant can break, leading to deflation of the breast. The fluid from the implant may then be absorbed by the body and the implant will need to be replaced. Implants generally must be monitored and may need replacing every ten years or so, depending on the patient's individual case.
  • Breast implants can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases. However, studies have revealed that this risk appears to be the same for women with breast implants and women without implants. There are risks of allergic reactions to implants, which are essentially a foreign object being placed into the body. This can result in the need for removal of the implants and reconstructive surgery.
  • Nipple necrosis leading to loss of the areola and/or nipple is a rare but serious side effect when incisions are made near the areola. Nipple necrosis is caused by impaired blood flow to the nipple and areola after surgery. The risk of this complication is higher in smokers.
  • Asymmetry of the size and shape of the breast is a common complication. It is impossible to create perfect symmetry and small differences should be expected.
  • Fluid accumulation in the breast, called a seroma, can occur after breast lift or augmentation. Seromas can be drained and usually resolve within a few weeks. Accumulation of blood in the skin after surgery is called a hematoma and usually must be removed surgically.
  • Changes in the skin, such as yellowing, darkening or redness, sores that won't heal, or changes to existing moles
  • Review your medical history. Be prepared to answer questions about current and past medical conditions. Tell the doctor if you have a family history of breast cancer. Share the results of any mammograms or breast biopsies. Talk about any medications you're taking or have taken recently, as well as any surgeries you've had.
  • Do a physical exam. To determine your treatment options, the doctor will examine your breasts — including the position of your nipples and areolae. He or she will also consider the quality of your skin tone. Breast skin that has a good tone will hold the breasts in a better position after a breast lift. The doctor might also take pictures of your breasts for your medical record.
  • Discuss your expectations. Explain why you want a breast lift and what you're hoping for in terms of appearance after the procedure. Make sure you understand the risks and benefits, including scarring and changes in nipple or breast sensation.

Before the procedure lift you might also need to:

Schedule a mammogram. Your doctor might recommend a baseline mammogram before the procedure and another mammogram a few months afterwards. This will help your medical team see changes in your breast tissue and interpret future mammograms.

Stop smoking. Smoking decreases blood flow in the skin and can slow the healing process. If you smoke, your doctor will recommend that you stop smoking before surgery.

Avoid certain medications. You'll likely need to avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding.

Arrange for help during recovery. Make plans for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you as you begin to recover. You might need someone to help you with daily activities, such as washing your hair, during your initial recovery.

Be at a healthy weight. Consider making dietary changes or participating in an exercise program to assist with weight loss if you've gained weight in the past year.
